The North Carolina Museum of Art is this week’s featured attraction

The North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, North Carolina is an impressive complex of buildings housing an equally impressive collection of artworks, there is an impressive history of grass-roots organizing and government-municipal cooperation.

The Museum’s expansive collection of artworks from around the world could keep one occupied for a full day. However, the organization’s unique history deserves acknowledgement, and its presence provides an invaluable opportunity to the citizens and visitors of North Carolina and the surrounding areas.

A movement aimed at creating a museum in North Carolina was begun by the North Carolina State Art Society in 1924. In 1928, Raleigh Agriculture Building was the site of the first temporary art installations thanks to funding from Raleigh businessman Robert F. Phifer.

Sam H. Kress, a famous philanthropist, anonymously funded a challenge grant for the purchase of a collection of art in 1947.

A national headline-making act, $1 million was ultimately appropriated by the state legislature in a move which followed a controversial session during which the bill’s proponent, Rep. John Kerr, famously said, “Mr. Speaker, the entire world will not exist on bread alone.”

It was ultimately used to buy 139 paintings and sculptures from European and American artists for a total of $1 million. With a matching $1 million contribution and 70 pieces of art dating mostly to the Italian Renaissance, Samuel Kress’ foundation added to the collection. It became the largest and most prestigious donation in the country and as a result, the North Carolina Museum of Art develops a reputation for being among the world’s best museums.

It opened on Morgan Street in the capital city of Raleigh, in 1956, in a new facility, the renovated warehouse previously home to the State Highway Division. State funding provided the means for the Museum to be established, which the local media renamed “Miracle on Morgan Street.”.

The North Carolina Museum of Art had outgrown its Morgan Street building within a decade, and looked for a new facility that was better suited to meet the temperature needs of the antiquated artwork.

State lawmakers formed a commission in 1967 to select a new location for the courthouse and oversee construction. In selecting the Blue Ridge Road location, the commission selected an antebellum location.

Designed by Edward Durrell Stone, the new site emphasizes the square as its central unit, which is used to design all the layouts. 1983 marked the opening of the new building.

Over the course of the following two years, the North Carolina Museum of Art began to envision a new building that would embrace sustainable principles and design, leading to the West Building.

In addition to having glass walls around its 127,000 square feet of exhibit space, the new building incorporated green technologies such as rainwater catchment and runoff control, climate-controlled galleries and areas, energy-efficient systems, and environmentally friendly landscaping.

Visitors to the North Carolina Museum of Art can explore art from all over the globe, representing the breadth of the human experience.

There are numerous works of art in the permanent collection, spanning the Renaissance through the nineteenth century.
