The first thing you can do for your children’s speaking is to introduce a reading habit. Don’t impose the choice of subject on them; buy them books that interest them because this will further arouse their interest in reading. The book can be about their favourite animal, or fictional character, or just a basic motivational book with short stories that imparts life lessons. If your child is more into the news and current affairs or interested in politics of the world, give them the daily newspaper and bring magazines for them.

Read to your child

You should even sit with your kid and introduce some family reading time. This helps them build a vocabulary and even say the word aloud. They get into the habit of using a dictionary when they read. Till they reach an age where they can read themselves, read bedtime stories to them to develop language skills. With every page, simple language, repetition and coloured visuals in some cases, your child builds a vocabulary which is an excellent alternative to watching television and listening to audio stories.

Converse with your children in English

Since children spend most of their day at home, they pick up most of their language-speaking skills from the house. So, make sure all your conversations take place in English. Give them instructions in English, ask them to describe their day in English and generally only use English to talk to each other at home. When you question them in English, they will respond in English. The necessary conversation skills and simple English sentences they learn at home will help them become more confident speaking English in public.

International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma program is based on inquiry-based learning and critical thinking. Kids come from all over the world; thus, the common language used here is English.

Allow Your Child Watch Cartoons In English

It is a known fact that most kids have picked up their English and the accent from Peppa pig. Just like that, many other lesson-learning cartoons in English should be encouraged. Since we live in a technologically advanced age, OTT platforms like Netflix, Disney, Apple TV, Prime etc., have the option to change the language. So if your kid enjoys a cartoon originally in your native language, just change it to English. This will keep the child enthralled as well as serve the purpose of teaching them how to speak in English simultaneously. Your kid may take a while to get comfortable with the language, but eventually it will be ok.

Motivate your child at Every Step

When you start talking to your children in English, your child will try their best to respond in simple English sentences but at times may fumble or be grammatically incorrect. Initially, even the pronunciations may be incorrect; kids will make such mistakes and also repeat them. However, please don’t get hassled. Trying is what will make them perfect. You will have to use an approach to correct them but it does not demotivate them. Your child should not lose confidence because they are not saying something the right way.
